Red Sky at Night

The layer of snow on the ice-covered lake turns magenta, as the sinking sun turns the billowing clouds a smoky, ruddy color. We’ve turned a corner. A new administration has stepped up to the podium.

Promises of extending opportunity to the fringe, making friends of our enemies and not learning hatred anymore; of defending democracy, giving all in service, extending hope; not fear, decency and goodness; to begin to listen to one another, to defend the truth and defeat the lies and to be a strong, trusted partner for peace. The dream of justice for all will be deferred no longer. The speech has a Utopian feel to it and everyone wishes it true.

In ages past, nations who rose and collapsed might tell us decay came from within. The Roman Empire had challenges within and without its borders and eventually, took on a form no longer recognizable. Societies rise with vision, but collapse where there is a lack of knowledge. When the eyes of a nation or a people are set on their sacred symbols; on their hallowed landmarks, human traditions and ability, they walk away from the ultimate truth and replace the truth of God with an idol. They believe they will find their own way, apart from God. In a word--sacred humanism.

When Jesus was asked by a lawyer, what is the greatest commandment of all, he said to him,

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40, ESV)

When the law is written in our heart, we extend the fruits of the spirit:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:20-23, ESV)

The world more than ever needs to see our shining light. Let’s honor Him with first place in our life.

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”

(2 Corinthians 3:17-18, ESV)

Blessings to you in this new year full of possibilities!
